Statement of Values - CHS Worship Team

1       In leading worship our aim is to enable people to enter into the presence of God, worshipping Him intimately in Spirit and Truth.  Musical ability should go hand in hand with and flow from a worshipping heart and we will strive to develop our skills individually and collectively.

2       We each recognise the genuine faith of other worshippers and worship leaders in the church and accept that there will be different preferences in worship and musical styles. We understand that, as part of the strategy to grow the church and lead people into an encounter with God, the different services have different styles of sung worship (see below).   Any major changes to these styles will only take place after formal deliberation and sanction by the church leadership.

3       The worship leader for each service has responsibility for choosing “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” for the service, having regard to the theme and in conjunction with the service leader.  The service leader and/or preacher may wish to suggest a particular song or style of song for different points in the service, but the final song choice is with the worship leader, subject to the service leader’s responsibility for timing.

4       We will leave any disagreements and misgivings about songs and worship styles behind when we come into a church service.  It is important that people see from the body language of everyone involved in leading worship that we are truly worshipping - united with each other, happy and confident.

5       As members of the worship team we will aim to commit ourselves to holiness of lifestyle and graciousness of demeanour, being mindful that we should “not let any unwholesome talk come out of [our] mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Eph 4v29).

6       We recognise that there will be times of disagreement.  We promise to seek the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, forgiving one another where necessary and approaching disagreement in a non-confrontational way.

7       We will “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ”, respecting each others roles and the authority structures within the church. (Eph 5 v21).

8       We will seek to grow our gifts (both musical and spiritual) and be ready to identify and encourage others who may be gifted and anointed to lead worship. Support will come from the more experienced members of the team, and from outside sources such as conferences or visiting trainers. At an individual and collective level sharing new resources is encouraged.

9       We will each actively try to be sensitive to the moving of the Spirit during services, and aim to work with the service leader in facilitating the exercising of spiritual gifts and waiting on the Holy Spirit.

10  We acknowledge joyfully that worship is the responsibility of the whole church body and not just of the worship team. We will encourage others to make comments or suggestions about our worship, provided these are constructive and expressed in a right spirit. We will pass comments on to the worship team leader or others as appropriate, or encourage the individual to speak to the appropriate person.

Worship styles at Sunday services

9am  A more formal, liturgical service with mainly hymns (old and new) but also contemporary songs judged appropriate. The organ is the preferred instrument for hymns although the clavinova may be used for songs.

10.45 An informal, much less liturgical service, always band led. The overwhelming majority of songs and hymns will be contemporary, although there may on occasion be an older hymn played with a contemporary ‘feel’ (i.e. suitable for a band not an organ) if the worship leader senses it is appropriate (though see value point 2). During the worship ‘block’ there will be songs that seek to draw us into intimate worship of our Lord. Prophesies, words and tongues/interpretation are all expected so space is given for these.

6.30pm  An informal, flexible service, with a generous amount of time for contemporary worship, including space for the gifts of the Spirit and testimonies.
